In 2023, the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA) completed the Active Transportation Plan (ATP), which outlines a vision for a regional network of trails for walking, biking, and other types of active transportation. To move this vision forward, the NJTPA is conducting corridor studies of the Pompton Valley Rail Trail and Traction Line Recreation Trail that explore potential route extensions, needed improvements, and next steps. The goal of these studies is to improve connections between communities and key destinations by creating safer, more accessible active-transportation options.
To support this work, the NJTPA is partnering with the New Jersey Bike & Walk Coalition and Rails to Trails Conservancy, leaders of the North Jersey Trail Network (NJTN) initiative. Together with regional partners, the initiative is working to create a connected regional network of safe, shared-use trails and on-street connections for walking and biking. The two corridor studies help advance the initiative by identifying opportunities to close important gaps in the regional trail system. The NJTN spans six counties –Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, and Union – and includes some of the most densely populated areas in northern New Jersey.
