Region-wide Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventory Project

2011

The NJTPA prepared a comprehensive Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory & Forecast covering its 13-county region, quantifying emissions across all major sectors — including residential, commercial, industrial, transportation, agriculture, waste management, and land use — for six key GHG gases (CO2, CH4, N2O, SF6, HFCs, and PFCs). Using 2006 as a baseline, the project also forecasted emissions to 2050.

Two accounting methods were employed: direct emissions and consumption-based emissions. The resulting data is intended to help state, regional, and local policymakers make informed decisions and develop targeted GHG reduction strategies at multiple levels of government.

The project was carried out by a consultant team led by TranSystems/E.H. Pechan & Associates, with support from AKRF, AECOM, and Arch Street Communications, and was overseen by a Technical Advisory Committee.
