Township of Berkeley Heights – 2025

2025

Goal: Develop a community and business-supported transit hub area plan around the Berkeley Heights Train Station leveraging the commercial district along Sherman and Springfield Avenues. Improve safety, accessibility, and active transportation opportunities for residents and visitors. Update municipal zoning policies to align current parking needs, driveway access, and land use compatibility with the town’s current buildings, land areas and public spaces.

Objectives:

  • Engage community members to identify preferred walkability, land use and station area access priorities for residents and visitors.
  • Incorporate Transit Friendly Planning principles in zoning policies that help address conflicting parking areas, driveways, and land uses.
  • Develop design concepts for adapting station commuter parking lots into convertible weekend and evening community event spaces.
  • Improve walk connections between the station and several municipal and county parks.
  • Recommend pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements using complete streets and traffic calming strategies such as curb extensions at intersections.
  • Explore implementing new bicycle lanes and signage between the station and project area.
