Transportation Management Associations (TMAs) are private, nonprofit organizations established to work with employers, local governments, schools, community organizations, and the public to encourage and create alternatives to driving alone for commuting and other trips. Transportation Management Associations (TMAs) work to educate the public about the importance of air quality, promote traffic safety through outreach and planning, and improve transportation options for older adults, low-income workers, and people with disabilities.
The TMA Council of NJ (TMAC NJ) is comprised of the Executive Directors of New Jersey’s Transportation Management Associations.
Eight TMAs operate in the state of New Jersey. Seven TMAs operate in the NJTPA region: Avenues in Motion, EZ Ride, goHunterdon, Greater Mercer TMA, Hudson TMA, Keep Middlesex Moving (KMM), and RideWise. Greater Mercer TMA covers areas in both the NJTPA and Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) regions, and Cross County Connection TMA serves areas in the DVRPC and South Jersey Transportation Planning Organization (SJTPO) regions.
About Transportation Management Associations
The NJTPA administers the Statewide TMA pass-through program grant, oversees the development of the TMA annual work programs, and coordinates activities among the TMAs, the NJTPA subregions, NJ TRANSIT, NJDOT, southern NJ MPOs, and other partners in regional mobility. The TMA Work Program consists of five required Goal Areas: Accessibility, Coordinated Public Transit for Vulnerable Populations, Economic Development, Environmental, and Safety, and one optional Goal Area: Reliability. This arrangement is intended to increase the level of coordination and cooperation between state and regional priorities and TMA activities in areas such as data collection, outreach, shuttle services, technical assistance, and the development and implementation of each MPO’s long range transportation plan.
TMA activities serve to reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, including promoting and supporting commuter vanpools and carpools, increasing transit ridership, encouraging walking, offering information on available public transit and local transportation services to enhance the accessibility and mobility of communities for and bicycling, and promoting electric vehicles use. Other activities include providing mobility solutions, information about public transit, and other local transportation services to increase the accessibility and mobility of communities to all travelers. TMAs also play an important role in construction mitigation and emergencies, providing timely information about road and transit conditions and alternative modes of travel.
Additionally, TMAs conduct road safety audits, walkability assessments, and speed studies to help reduce the number of fatalities and serious injury crashes on New Jersey roadways. Furthermore, TMAs are key players in planning for and improving Human Services Transportation (transportation for older adults (65+), low-income people, veterans, and individuals with disabilities) through travel training, and managing shuttles or other transportation services.
In addition to receiving funding from the NJTPA, the TMAs are supported by grants from NJ TRANSIT, NJDOT, the NJ Division of Highway Traffic Safety, and private grants.
