The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is accepting applications for the 2027 Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program through November 13.
Safe Routes to School is funded through the Federal Highway Administration’s Federal Aid Program and is administered by the NJDOT Division of Local Resources and Community Development, in partnership with the state’s three Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO): the North Jersey Transportation Planning Authority (NJTPA), the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC), and the South Jersey Transportation Planning Organization (SJTPO). The SRTS program grants are available for infrastructure projects that encourage and enable K-12 students to walk and bike safely to school.
Schedule a SRTS pre-application meeting
Counties, municipalities, and school districts are eligible to apply for funding. Potential applicants must schedule a pre-application meeting by October 9 to be considered for funding. Applicants are also strongly encouraged to attend a SRTS Grant Training Webinar. One-on-one meetings will be held with NDOT District Staff and a MPO representative and the applicant requesting the meeting must be a representative of the local public agency, not a consultant. Meetings, which are mandatory, will be up to one hour.
These meetings allow potential applicants to discuss their proposed project, ask questions, and receive guidance before the application is submitted. To schedule a pre-application meeting:
