New Jersey established the ambitious statewide goal of eliminating fatal and serious injury crashes by 2040 through the NJ Target Zero Action Plan. Across the state, counties and municipalities have advanced this effort by developing and adopting Local Safety Action Plans that identify priority safety needs, high-risk locations, and strategies to reduce crashes and save lives.

With plans in place, the next step is implementation. The NJTPA is piloting the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Advancement Program to help communities move from planning to action. The program provides training, technical assistance, and implementation support to advance transportation safety improvements, strengthen local implementation committees, and build the capacity needed to achieve long-term safety goals.
Municipal and county staff, transportation professionals, local elected officials, advocates, and engaged residents all play an important role in creating safer streets. The SS4A Advancement Program provides opportunities for these stakeholders to build the knowledge, partnerships, and skills needed to advance transportation safety initiatives and implement meaningful improvements in their communities.
Turning Plans into Action — Strategies for Transportation Safety
The adoption of a local safety action plan is only the beginning. This series of webinars will help municipal and county practitioners, transportation professionals, elected officials, and community stakeholders advance transportation safety improvements in their communities.
Many communities have adopted safety plans, identified priority locations, and established ambitious goals. The challenge is determining what comes next.
This session will focus on practical implementation strategies that local governments can use to organize their efforts, identify achievable priorities, and begin making safety improvements.
Urban and suburban communities face unique challenges related to busy multimodal corridors, competing roadway demands, and the safety of people walking, bicycling, taking transit, and driving.
