The NJTPA has partnered with the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) to offer a Road Safety Audit (RSA) to towns and counties in the NJTPA region. An RSA is a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) proven safety countermeasure that consists of a formal safety performance examination of a roadway by an independent, multidisciplinary team. It qualitatively estimates and reports on potential road safety issues and identifies opportunities for improvement in safety for all road users.
NJTPA subregions have been successful in converting short term recommendations from RSAs into federally funded construction projects through the Local Safety Program (now called the Subregional Safety Program). Eleven of the NJTPA’s 15 subregions have conducted a combined 51 RSAs as of 2023. Short term recommendations from 32 of these assessments have been or are slated to advance to the Subregional Safety Program.
